SPANISH FORK — A Utah County teen has embraced the season of giving and raised enough money to make 220 blankets for patients at Primary Children's Hospital.
Makayla Olson said the idea for the donations started in 2012 when she and her friends decided to make blankets instead of giving gifts to each other. Then Olson started raising money so she could buy the materials and make more blankets.
This year she raised enough money to make 220 blankets and she and her family and friends gathered Saturday night at Spanish Fork High School to make the blankets for kids who will be spending the holidays in the hospital.
Primary Children's Hospital officials said the teen's generous donation will help make the rooms feel more like home for the patients.
"People who are stuck in the hospital, the kids that are there and thinking about them and how they have to be there for Christmas and I get so much here," Olson said. "It's really rewarding to know that I'm giving back and helping somebody else over the holiday."
Olson plans to deliver the blankets to Primary Children's Hospital on Tuesday. A hospital spokeswoman said some of the blankets will be used on the beds and others will be given to children as gifts.
