Outgoing BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall officially announced his new staff when he moves over to Virginia, adding seven to a group that will likely include one more assistant coach later.
In addition to the six former BYU assistants reported earlier, Mendenhall is adding former East Carolina coach Ruffin McNeill as assistant head coach and inside linebackers coach at Virginia.
McNeill, a longtime associate of Mendenhall and offensive coordinator Robert Anae, was 42-34 in six season as head coach of his alma mater. McNeill and Anae knew each other on staff under former BYU rugby player Mike Leach at Texas Tech, as well as at UNLV.
In addition to Anae, Mendenhall brings from BYU defensive secondary coach Nick Howell, outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Kelly Poppinga, offensive line coach Garrett Tujague, running backs coach Mark Atuaia and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck.
"The opportunity to bring six of my current staff members from BYU is very important," Mendenhall said in a statement from Virginia. "It provides the continuity that is critical for this coaching transition and it demonstrates how vested these coaches are in the plan we have for the Virginia program."
Wide receivers coach Marques Hagans is the lone hold-over from the Cavaliers' coaching staff under former coach Mike London. A former Virginia quarterback, Hagans joined the staff in 2011 as an offensive graduate assistant and became the wide receivers coach in 2013.
After leaving Virginia as the No. 7 all-time passer with 4,877 yards, Hagans spent four seasons in the NFL with St. Louis, Kansas City and Washington before retiring from professional football in 2010.
"I look forward to announcing the final staff member in the near future and to working with this group of coaches after we complete the task at hand at BYU," Mendenhall said.
