COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A Cottonwood Heights home is considered a total loss after it went up in flames Friday afternoon.

Unified Fire Authority Capt. Dan Brown said firefighters arrived at 1921 E. Creek Road (7300 South) around 2:10 p.m. to find the home fully engulfed and immediately went into a defensive mode, meaning they sprayed water on the two-story structure from the outside and didn't enter.

After receiving word that one person was unaccounted for, crews searched the home and exited again, Brown said. Nobody was found inside.

The cause of the fire wasn't known Friday. The home was a loss, Brown said, but a dollar amount of damage wasn't immediately clear.

Firefighters used a lot of water to combat the blaze because the house was built in a log cabin style and the blaze created a lot of heat. It was also difficult to douse quickly because of the precautions that were taken because of the reports of a possible tenant inside, Brown said.

The home was split into two apartments and four people lived there, though none of them were home at the time.

The fire melted siding on a home next door to the east. A person in that home first reported the fire, Brown said.

Cameron Court said he was driving by the neighborhood when he noticed smoke coming from the home and pulled over.

"It went from smoke to flames in just a matter of minutes, and pretty soon the entire house was engulfed in the fire," he said, adding that a car in front of the home also "burned up." He said he was surprised at how long it seemed to take for firefighters to arrive.

Brown said fire crews arrived "approximately six or seven minutes after (the call) came in."

"We got here really fast, but it was a really fast-moving fire," he said.
