BRIAN HEAD — Brian Head Resort celebrated its 50th anniversary last ski season by upgrading and adding several new amenities that visitors and locals can enjoy this winter.

Located 3 miles from beautiful Cedar Breaks National Monument, Brian Head Resort opened in 1964 and offers 675 skiable acres, according to public relations coordinator Mark Wilder. The resort has grown and made several improvements over the last 3 years including remodeling both base lodges and restaurant and replacing the main chairlift with a high-speed detachable quad chair, Wilder said.

"It provides twice the access and half the chairlift time," Wilder said. "That was a huge hit last year. It was really a cool addition to the resort. … It's the latest state-of-the-art type chairlift. So, more skiing, more snowboarding, more fun on the hills and half the ride up."

Brian Head Resort opened for the 2014-2015 season on Friday, Nov. 20 and offers eight chairlifts, two surface lifts ("magic carpets") and two tubing hills. The snow tubing courses have four and six lanes and are about 200 feet long, Wilder said. People are transported by a surface lift or tow rope at the tubing hills.

The resort does not offer lodging on the premises, but a variety of lodging options are available near the resort, ranging from hotels to luxury cabins and economy condominiums.

Wilder said Brian Head Resort has some of the best teaching terrain in the country for those wanting to learn to ski or snowboard and the resort offers Terrain-Based Learning, a new winter sports teaching technique.

During the ski season, the resort owner hosts a Kansas City-style BBQ every Saturday night, Wilder said. The BBQ includes smoked meats ranging from pulled pork to brisket for $5-$10 at the Last Chair Saloon in the Giant Steps Lodge.

While most resorts are primarily known for their winter sports, Brian Head Resort also has a variety of summer activities including zip lining, a rock climbing wall, a bungee jump and world-class mountain biking, Wilder said.

"We are some of the pioneers in some of the best mountain biking terrain in Utah," he said.

No matter the season, Brian Head is a haven for outdoors enthusiasts.
