DRAPER — A man was arrested Tuesday for attempting to cash a forged check and police have linked him to hundreds of mail theft incidents, police said.

Draper police had received reports of an increase in mail thefts throughout Draper over the last two weeks. Most of the thefts occurred between 4-7 a.m. and the mail was taken from residential mailboxes, police said.

A vehicle was caught on video surveillance and Kevin Humphreys, 35, was identified as the "main suspect," police said. Humphreys was located Tuesday afternoon and arrested by Unified police officers after he allegedly attempted to cash a forged check at a Check City in Midvale.

Draper police officers searched Humphrey's residence Tuesday evening and found hundreds of pieces of mail from victims in several cities throughout Salt Lake County, police said.

"Draper investigators will be working with investigators from other cities to identify and return mail to victims," police said.

Humphreys had been arrested by Draper police on two previous incidents in connection with similar violations. At the time of his arrest, he had multiple warrants for his arrest, police said. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Tuesday.

According to Utah state court records, Humphreys pleaded guilty in August to obtaining multiple identifying documents of another person, a third-degree felony. A Draper police officer had stopped Humphreys in "a mail theft in progress," at which time Humphreys identified himself using someone else's name and date of birth, according to charging documents.

Two officers searched Humphrey's car and "located many pieces of mail from over 40 victims." Included in the stolen mail was a Social Security card from one person, Social Security information from another, and a Utah driver license from a third, the charges state. Humphreys was sentenced to probation, but a warrant was issued for his arrest within a week of his release when he failed to meet with parole officials.

Humphreys has an extensive criminal history in Utah dating back to 1999, including multiple felony convictions of theft, shoplifting, identity fraud, obtaining identifying documents of another person and possession of a controlled substance.

To avoid potential mail theft, police said people should always retrieve their mail as soon as possible after it is delivered. It is recommended to drop off outgoing mail at a post office rather than leaving it in a residential mailbox. Police also recommended having packages delivered to your workplace or with a family member or neighbor who is home, rather than having a package left on your doorstep.
