NAPLES, Uintah County — A Uintah County family called for help Tuesday night when their house caught fire, then made it outside to safety before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters from the Naples and Uintah County-Vernal City fire departments responded to the call from a house near 900 East and 5000 South shortly after 5:30 p.m. They could see visible flames "from quite a distance away," Naples Fire Chief Brett Reynolds said.

"We had a family call, had a fire in the house and they did the right thing, got their small children out," Reynolds said. "Everybody's safe and that's really the most important thing to us."

The fire was apparently caused by a heat lamp placed too close to the straw bedding the family had next to the house for their outdoor pets, Reynolds said. The fire was contained in about 20 minutes. Fire officials estimated the damages at $100,000.

"It's a terrible time of year to have this happen," Reynolds said.
