SANDY — SANDY — Sandy police confirmed Tuesday that a man found dead in a basement apartment Monday died of a gunshot wound.

But Sandy Police Sgt. Dean Carriger said retracing the steps of Marco Antonio Ibanez, 20, and finding the person responsible for killing him will be more difficult.

About 3:15 p.m. Monday, police were called to a house at 1365 E. 8085 South and discovered Ibanez's body.

No weapon was found at the scene, which is one of the main reasons why detectives have classified Ibanez's death as a homicide, Carriger said. A search warrant was served on the house late Monday, but he declined to say what evidence was collected.

One of the difficulties investigators have had with the case has been sorting out who was renting a room at the house and who was just staying for a couple of days.

Carriger said the house is a rental. But the original renters may have already moved out and were sub-renting to other people, who were in turn renting out other parts of the house, such as the basement, he said. As of Tuesday, police did not know if Ibanez was renting or even living in the house or was just visiting.

Detectives were focused Tuesday on retracing Ibanez's steps and figuring out who was the last person to see him alive, Carriger said. Ibanez's mother lives in Salt Lake County, but investigators were unsure Tuesday if he had been living with her.

Sandy police did not reveal Tuesday where Ibanez was shot. Previously they had said a lot of blood was found near the victim's head.

Court records list Ibanez as having a Salt Lake City address. In January, Ibanez pleaded guilty to drug distribution and attempted drug possession in exchange for the dismissal of a charge of being a restricted person in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to probation.

In that case, police found Ibanez to be in possession of marijuana and cocaine. He also had a handgun that he told police was for "protection," according to charging documents.

Anyone with information about Ibanez is asked to contact Sandy police at 801-568-4636.
