SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake police sergeant injured while investigating a possible car burglar was resting at home Thursday.

Meanwhile, the search for the driver continued.

About 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, a female sergeant, whose name was not released by the police department, was participating in an operation concentrating on car prowlers in the downtown area, said Salt Lake police detective Veronica Montoya.

The veteran officer came across a person acting suspiciously in a pickup truck near 550 W. 100 South. A man was in the driver's seat with the driver's side door open, according to police.

Shortly after the sergeant began talking to the man, police said he threw the car in reverse, hitting the officer with the open car door and pushing her 10 feet with her feet dragging a portion of the way.

Montoya said there was no body camera video recorded by the sergeant. Investigators were checking nearby businesses Thursday for possible surveillance video.

The sergeant was able to drive herself to a hospital to be checked out before she was sent home to rest, Montoya said. Pain in her lower back was the worst injury she reported.

Anyone with information about the man who allegedly hit the officer can call police at 801-799-3000.
