CACHE COUNTY — Police identified the 10-year-old boy who was shot and killed while hunting Saturday.

Smithfield resident Zachary Woodruff was sitting on the floorboard of a four-wheeler in attempt to stay out of the wind when another hunter he was with tried to take out his rifle from his own four-wheeler.

The rifle then fired, and Woodruff died on scene. Police are calling the incident an accident, though it is still under investigation. Police said no charges are currently pending.

No additional information was released.

Safety reminders for hunters
  • Always control the muzzle of the weapon, especially when loaded
  • Be certain of your target before firing
  • Know you're surroundings, especially what is in front or behind you at all times
  • Do not ride on an ATV with a loaded weapon
