SALT LAKE CITY — Two residents located explosive devices and delivered the dangerous items to Salt Lake police Sunday in separate incidents.

About 1 p.m., children playing in a backyard found a stick of dynamite, said Salt Lake police detective Richard Chipping. It wasn't immediately clear whether the children found it in a shed or just lying in the yard, he said.

A parent took the stick of dynamite to the department's Pioneer Precinct, 1040 W. 700 South, where it was determined that the device was real.

"It was an actual explosive, it could have gone off," Chipping said.

The Salt Lake City Fire Department's bomb squad was called to dispose of the dynamite.

Bringing it to us is not as safe as just having us come out. We prefer people not bring explosives to our building.

About 9 p.m., a man who was moving found an M-125 explosive in his house and took it to the main Salt Lake Public Safety Building, 475 S. 300 East. The bomb squad was also called to dispose of that device.

Because dynamite and other explosives become more unstable the older they get, Chipping said the department would prefer that residents call emergency crews to their homes to inspect any potential devices they should find rather than handling them, and transporting them to the police station.

"Bringing it to us is not as safe as just having us come out," he said. "We prefer people not bring explosives to our building."
