SALT LAKE CITY — Here at KSL, we believe people have good in them and everyone can help make their community better.

On Mondays, we feature stories of times people have reached out to those around them and lifted them up. Often, it's just a simple "thank you" or small act of kindness. But sometimes, like in the case of Heather R., it's a coming together of congregation members to help a grieving mother.

On stepping in during a tragedy:

Heather R.

"In September 2014, I came home from work and was locked out of my home. When my daughter came home from school a little later, she forced the window open only to find my 18-year-old son pale and lifeless. She attempted CPR but he did not revive. The neighbors took my younger children into their homes to keep them from seeing their brother, the police, and the ambulance scene in our home.

"Our bishop from church, and many neighbors immediately organized meals coming into our home. We had many friends come over offering service, gifts, listening ears, and hugs. The kindness and service we received did not end that day — we felt the warmth from many loving hearts during the next few weeks."

Finding the positive:

Brandy C.

"My husband is a police officer, so I hear a lot of the negative things that happen around me. However, there are a lot of good people in our state. There have been numerous times that others have paid for his meal in the drive through, and many moms who have had their children come up to him and thank him for all that he does. Sometimes with all the negative in the news, we forget to find the positive, and there is a lot of it out there."

On quietly helping:

Heather S.

"One Saturday this summer I was having a yard sale. I had hung up some signs in the surrounding neighborhoods to advertise, and as I was driving home I noticed one of my signs had blown down the street and into a yard. I went home to get my tape so I could return and hang it back up, but when I got there not only had someone picked up the sign, but they had also put it on a home-made stand and stuck it in the lawn next to the post where it had originally hung. I was so amazed someone took the time and effort to put my sign back!"

On stepping in:

Caytee W.

"As a new mother flying across the country five years ago, I couldn't have been more frightened flying alone with my newborn. I began to board the plane with my carry-on luggage, diaper bag, stroller, car seat and baby. As everyone watched this circus in front of them get on the plane, one elderly man stepped forward and grabbed by bags. He walked me and my child to my seat and then waited for us as the plane landed to walk us to our next flight. He may not remember what he did that day, but I can still remember him vividly. Don't underestimate the impact you'll make while helping a young mom."
