OREM — One person died and another is in critical condition after a car hit two bicyclists Saturday, police said.

The accident occurred near 800 E. University Parkway, according to the Orem Police Department. Officials said a husband and wife, 55-year-old Kevin Bown and 51-year-old Stacy Bown, were transported to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

Stacy Bown later died from her injuries, according to Orem police.

Police said the Bowns, who were riding their bikes south on 800 East, had a green light and the right of way. Investigators believe an eastbound car ran a red light before hitting the couple on their bikes.

"This man, for whatever reason, did not stop at all," Lt. Craig Martinez said. "Witnesses said there was really no touching of the brakes at all when he hit these two."

Both Stacy and Kevin Bown were wearing helmets at the time of the accident, according to Martinez. He said the accident happened a few blocks away from their home.

The 26-year-old driver of the car is reportedly cooperating with investigators. He was interviewed and released. While police said they do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Correction: The last name of the couple was initially reported as being "Brown." The correct spelling is "Bown."
