SANDY — Police are asking for help to identify the man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman on her way to work.
The man followed the woman when she got off a TRAX train in Sandy at about 11 a.m. on Aug. 25, according to the Sandy Police Department. Investigators released surveillance images of the man Wednesday.
The man tried to talk to the woman while she was riding on the TRAX train but she ignored him, according to police. They said after she got off the train, the woman noticed the man got off at the same stop.
"The victim felt the suspect was following her and changed direction, leaving the train platform on a path going towards 9000 South," police said in a statement. "While on the pathway, the suspect grabbed the victim from behind and sexually assaulted her. The victim fought back by biting the suspect and yelling to draw attention."
After the woman fought back, police said the man fled in the direction of the train platform. Investigators described the man as being between 5 feet 5 inches tall and 5 feet 10 inches tall and of a heavy build, with black hair and dark eyes. He is believed to be of Pacific Islander descent and had an "afro hairstyle" and "scraggly" beard and mustache at the time of the assault.
Anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the man can contact the Sandy Police Department at 801-799-3000. The case reference is SY 2015-39088.
