OGDEN — One man was killed and another critically injured after being ejected from a truck that hit a guard rail Saturday night.
Police said the two men were suspects in a beer theft at a 7-Eleven, 803 24th Street that occurred a few minutes before the crash.
On Sunday, Ogden Police identified one of the crash victims as Daniel Hernandez, 21, of Weber County. He died at the scene. Police have not released the name of the other man, who remained in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing.
A witness told police that two men entered the convenience store at 10:35 p.m. and left the store with beer without paying, according to Ogden Police Lt. Jake Sube. The pickup the men were in hit another car while they were fleeing the scene.
Within minutes, police received reports of a crash involving a white pickup on the 1300 block of Valley Drive, which police believe was the same vehicle involved in the theft.
The truck was driving at a fast speed and hit the guard rail while trying to clear a sharp curve. The two men were ejected from the truck, Sube said. One man died at the scene and the second was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. Neither man appeared to be wearing a seat belt, according to Sube.
Police believe alcohol played a role in the accident.
