Desktop computers, tablets, smartphones and similar devices are powerful and allow users to communicate and find answers in a matter of seconds. They increase workplace productivity and can help users stay organized and on schedule. However, they can also cause discomfort and vision issues associated with digital eye strain and dry eye disease.

What is dry eye disease?

One of the major effects of digital eye strain is a chronic condition called dry eye disease, where the tear film in the eye has issues producing or retaining tears, resulting in discomfort and symptoms that affect day-to-day activities. Common signs of dry eye disease include burning, redness, light sensitivity, stinging, excess tearing, vision fluctuations, and discomfort.

A number of factors can contribute to the risk of developing dry eye such as environmental factors, wearing contact lenses, age, gender and previous eye surgery.. Although excessive time spent staring at smartphones and other digital devices can further increase the risk of dry eye, by utilizing the tips below, you can help reduce the effect of digital eye strain and its contribution to developing dry eye.

20-20-20 rule

Giving yourself regular breaks from staring at screens can help prevent eye strain and dryness. The 20-20-20 rule recommends you take a break from your computer or digital screen every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds or longer, and make sure you look at objects at least 20 feet away.

Don't forget to blink

Blinking regularly is an important habit that will help prevent you from experiencing symptoms of dry eye. Studies show that people blink 66% less often when staring at a smartphone or screen. Blinking is important because it helps wash tears over your eyes, clearing away dust and debris and keeping eyes moisturized and healthy.

Blinking is also essential for maintaining a healthy tear film and preventing dry eye. When you blink, you secrete oils from your eyelids meibomian glands, which is necessary to prevent your tears from evaporating and drying out.

Adjust computer settings

Adjusting your computer setup and lighting can help reduce the effects of digital eye strain. Sit tall and adjust the height of the computer screen so it is 4 to 8 inches lower than your eyes and approximately 20 to 26 inches away from your body. You can also lower the contrast settings on your computer, and make sure you position your screen away from external lighting sources to avoid glare.

Artificial tears & oil supplements

If you work at a desk job or spend excessive amounts of time looking at screens and monitors, using over-the-counter artificial tears can help relieve symptoms of digital eye strain and dry eye. If you are looking for methods to help prevent and control dry eye, doctors often recommend adding flaxseed and fish oils to your diet.

By following these tips, you can help prevent and reduce the effects of digital eye strain and reduce the likeliness of experiencing dry eye symptoms.
