Exacting a measure of payback for elimination from each of the last two NCAA tournaments, the 11th-ranked BYU women's soccer team shut out the visiting Colorado Buffaloes on Friday night, breaking the BYU program's single-game attendance record in the process.

A South Field crowd of 5,589 watched as BYU (2-0-0) surged to a 2-0 lead less than a half-hour into the game, on goals from junior midfielder Elena Medeiros in the 13th minute and sophomore forward Nadia Gomes in the 28th.

Medeiros opened the scoring with a curling blast from the outside edge of the penalty area that clanged off the left goal post and in, while Gomes scored with a quick-hitting left-footed blast in traffic, from about 10 yards out.

The early lead held up as junior keeper Rachel Boaz stopped five shots on goal, and short-circuited numerous scoring opportunities with clean catches on on Colorado (1-1-1) crosses.

Friday night's win stopped the Buffaloes' two-game win streak over BYU, with both victories coming in the NCAA tournament. In 2013, Colorado beat the Cougars 2-1 in Tallahassee to advance to the Sweet 16, while last year, the Buffs blanked BYU 2-0 in a frigid first-round meeting on Colorado's home pitch in Boulder.

Friday night's record attendance number surpassed the previous mark of 5,402, for a home game against Utah in 2013. The Cougars' next home game comes against the Utes next Friday night at South Field. Between now and then, BYU will hit the road for a Monday-night meeting with Nebraska in Lincoln.
