COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Brighton quarterback Drew Jensen returned for his senior season after barely playing one game a year ago with a knee injury.

But it didn't last as long as he wanted.

Jensen will miss at least several weeks with an injury to his posterior collateral ligament suffered in the Bengals' opening-week win over Herriman last week.

The senior BYU commit injured the other knee from last year on the second play of the game when he took a fake punt for a long run and a first down to help the Bengals' offense garner momentum during a slow start.

When asked about the play, which saw Jensen temporarily leave the game but re-enter moments later, Brighton coach Ryan Bullet said Jensen checked out fine and called the initial injury minor.

Further tests revealed a much more significant scope of the damage, though.

Brighton plays at Fremont today.

Also last week, Desert Hills junior Nephi Sewell suffered a broken neck in the Thunder's loss to Jordan a week ago.

Sewell was defending a crossing route in the first quarter when he collided with a Jordan player, and he initially felt like he suffered a concussion.

Upon further evaluation, doctors discovered fractured vertebrae in his neck and performed surgery last Saturday to fuse his C4 and C5 vertebrae. Sewell is out for the season, and he may be done with football, as well.

Fortunately for Sewell, he was spotted back at practice two days after surgery, just hanging out with his teammates and friends.

Desert Hills hosts Las Vegas' Foothill High at 7 p.m. in St. George.
