SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert wants kids to ditch carpools and start walking to school instead.

Herbert is set to walk with students and parents from Highland Park Elementary in Salt Lake City on Thursday.

He's encouraging use of an app from the Utah Department of Transportation that lets parents coordinate walking groups to and from school and tells them when their kids have arrived safety.

Officials say the free app called Walking School Bus makes walking safer and easier.

State officials say that going to school on foot helps kids get active and reduces carbon dioxide emissions from cars.
