RICHFIELD — Pipe bombs were discovered in the home of a man where one of the devices had exploded in his hand.
Officers were called to a home near 300 West and 700 South in Richfield about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a fireworks accident, according to police. A firework had reportedly exploded in the hand of Travis Hatch, 49.
Hatch was taken to Sevier Valley Medical Center and then by medical helicopter to a Salt Lake hospital.
As police continued their investigation, officers said they learned that it wasn't actually a firework that injured Hatch but a pipe bomb that he was working on. Detectives went back to Hatch's home and found two more completed pipe bombs, police said.
The Utah County sheriff's bomb squad assisted with the removal and disposal of the bombs.
There was no immediate word Thursday of what Hatch intended to do with the pipe bombs.
