Agencies evaluate Utah's recreation industry in face of overcrowding

Utah State Parks added nearly 100 stalls for boats and vehicles at Utah Lake this summer, another entrance lane and made other improvements at Jordanelle Reservoir to boost visitor capacity.

National Park Service officials are grappling with signficant spikes in visitation at Arches and other national parks in Utah, and last week, the agency announced that day-use permits will be required for White Rim and Elephant Hills roads at Canyonlands beginning Sept. 1 to better manage the visitor experience.

22 missing, unclaimed veterans in Utah laid to rest

Marci Stevens could hardly contain her emotions Saturday as she and her husband accompanied the remains of 22 previously unidentified veterans to their final resting spot at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park.

"It gives me chills to think of the stories of these men's lives," she said. "It's kind of heartbreaking to think of what might have happened and how they somehow got lost in the shuffle."

Roger Graves, the Utah coordinator for the nationwide Missing in America Project, said the men are finally receiving the respect and honor they deserve.

Herriman man: Brain tumor felt like 'brain freeze'

Jason Williams is a father of four. A runner and athlete, just over a year ago he got the shock of his life.

"I've got a scar," said Williams, who lives in Herriman. He pointed to the back of his head. "It starts here and goes up about 7 inches."

The scan at University Hospital revealed an aggressive brain tumor. His symptoms started with fatigue, then vertigo and headaches.

"It would feel like I'd just eaten a gallon of ice cream in about 10 seconds — major brain freeze and that was way worse than the vertigo," he said.

Utah boy whose mailman brought him books receives worldwide generosity

Saturday, when Ron Lynch opened his mail truck at Mathew Flores' home, the boy's eyes widened and he yelled out with excitement.

Packages of all shapes and sizes filled the small rectangular truck. The brown boxes and envelopes stacked to the top of the truck contained books for the boy who loves reading so much, he used to find and read people's discarded junk mail.

Lynch, a mail carrier, noticed this boy and pleaded for people to provide the voracious reader with more material.

Local man brings piece of Hawaii to Utah mountains

In Utah, we have a lot in common with our neighboring states, but one state we don't have a lot in common with is Hawaii. We're aren't exactly close to the ocean, and there aren't a lot of surfers out on the Great Salt Lake. But one man is trying to bring a piece of Aloha to the Wasatch Mountains.

Making Logan — a city of 48,000 people, 3,000 miles from Hawaii — a gathering place for the Utah Ukulele Festival seems a little out of tune.

"Yeah, it's weird," David Manoa, one of the festival's organizers, said. "It doesn't seem to fit, but it works."

2 new coordinators, but same old Aggie football program

Utah State head coach Matt Wells is thinking he should be concerned about breaking into two new coordinators in 2015.

But he isn't, with the Aggies' additions of defensive coordinator Kevin Clune and offensive newcomer Josh Heupel from Oklahoma.

"You look at defense, and Kevin was our linebacker coach for five years," Wells said. "My wife says he just took a one-year sabbatical to Hawaii."

Smith, Phillips lead RSL Women to rout in WPSL Elite title match

For nearly seven years, Collette Smith has watched Real Salt Lake Women grow into the top level of women's soccer in Utah, hoping for a championship.

When she got the chance to play for it, she didn't waste any time.

Smith had two goals, and current BYU midfielder Bizzy Phillips added two goals and an assist to help RSL Women beat the San Francisco Nighthawks 7-0 in the WPSL Elite title game at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Patton Kizzire wins Web.com Tour's Utah Championship

Patton Kizzire won the Utah Championship on Sunday for first Web.com Tour title, beating South Korea's Sung Kang with a 3-foot birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff.

Kizzire closed with a 3-under 69 to match Kang at 19-under 269 at Thanksgiving Point. The 29-year-old former Auburn player earned $117,000 to push his tour-leading total to $391,699 — giving him a lead of $123,211 over No. 2 Peter Malnati.

"Winning a tournament and winning the money title are the two goals that I have this year," Kizzire said. "To finally get winning the tournament under my belt gives me a solid advantage going into the last four tournaments to secure that top spot."

Whittingham talks Hatfield, Booker and stadium expansion

Utah head coach Kyle Whttingham didn't have to answer questions about his job status this year at Pac-12 media days.

With a 9-win season and a new contract extension, the questions this year were about his potentially Heisman Trophy-caliber running back, stadium expansion and the suspension of defensive back Dominique Hatfield.

Charges of felony aggravated robbery were dropped against Hatfield, who would've been a junior cornerback with the Utes in 2015. He's been cleared of all wrongdoing with the law.

Seahawks finalize contract extension with LB Bobby Wagner

Right on the heels of signing quarterback Russell Wilson to a contract extension, the Seattle Seahawks have locked up All-Pro middle linebacker Bobby Wagner.

The Seahawks and Wagner finalized a four-year contract extension on Saturday night, making sure Seattle keeps Wagner beyond the 2015 season when his rookie contract was set to expire. Team owner Paul Allen confirmed the agreement in a tweet.

NFL.com reported the deal is worth $43 million, which would make Wagner the highest-paid middle linebacker in football.
