SALT LAKE CITY — A local golf course was again vandalized by horses Tuesday night and police are asking for the public's help to find the riders.

This is the fourth time hole 16 has been vandalized in the past year, said Glendale Golf Course superintendent Bryan Witzel, and repairs were just finished from the last vandalism at a cost of thousands of dollars.

"It was looking really good," Witzel said. "You get here and it's destroyed again; it's disheartening."

Witzel's son saw four male riders on three horses Tuesday night around 8 p.m. on the course, heading south. Witzel believes the riders are accessing the green through a biking and walking trail nearby. Horseshoe imprints and deep cuts can be seen in the grass.

It typically takes two days to fix the hoof prints, plus two months for the grass to return to normal, he said. After the last vandalism, course officials put rope fencing up to keep riders out of the area, but they keep coming back. However, he said Wednesday night that after 10 hours of working on the hole it was "very playable."

The Glendale Golf Course is already having financial difficulty as the city is working to shut it down and open a common area for the public to use.

"This has already been a hard year with all the closure talk," Witzel said. "And morale — my guys' morale is getting a little low. And when you come and see this and spend all this time and effort to fix this — it's disheartening."

Police say whoever is responsible could likely face charges of criminal mischief and vandalism. Anyone with information is asked to call the Salt Lake City Police Department at 801-799-3000 and use case reference number 140106.
