IRON COUNTY — A new Utah catch-and-release record for wipers was set in Iron County, coming in at a whopping 26 inches.

Mt. Pleasant resident Paul Roper caught the fish at Newcastle Reservoir on June 15, according to Division of Wildlife Resources public information officer Amy Canning. Located about 30 miles west of Cedar City, Newcastle Reservoir is about 224 surface acres and has a variety of fish species including rainbow trout, smallmouth bass and wipers.

In 2005, DWR began a new management strategy for Newcastle Reservoir and introduced wipers, an aggressive open-water predator that is a cross between white bass and striped bass. The fish were introduced to the reservoir "in the hope of reducing the shiner population," according to the DWR website. Canning said DWR continues to stock thousands of wipers in the reservoir annually, but the fish are typically quite small, ranging from .37 inches to just under 2 inches long.

At 26 inches, Roper's fish was confirmed as the new state catch-and-release record for wipers, beating out the previous 25-inch record caught in Willard Bay in 2005. Because weight is not a requirement for catch-and-release records, Roper's wiper was not weighed, Canning said.

Newcastle Reservoir has a two wiper limit.
