SALT LAKE CITY โ€” Backup quarterback Donovan Isom has transferred from the University of Utah football program, according to one of his tweets Saturday night.

Excited about the new opportunities and being closer to home. Proud to say I will be attending SLU #LionUp ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ pic.twitter.com/DbqifXSkEl โ€” Donovan Isom ICE (@d_isom12) July 25, 2015

The redshirt freshman is transferring closer to home and will be attending Southeastern Louisiana University โ€” an FCS program โ€” where he'll likely be an instant contributor to the Lions.

Isom was projected to be the next in line once Travis Wilson and Kendal Thompson graduated from the program but didn't make the steps the coaching staff was hoping for in the offseason. In spring workouts, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said "Donovan is probably a little bit behind the pack" regarding all the competition in that position.

Whittingham added in spring workouts that Wilson, Thompson and redshirt freshman Chase Hansen were going to be the only quarterbacks getting reps in fall camp, leaving Isom on the outside for the second season in a row.

Utah currently sits at five quarterbacks heading into fall camp, with Wilson expected to be the starter. Behind Wilson is Thompson, Hansen, sophomore Brandon Cox and sophomore Conner Manning.
