MIDVALE — Smoke and flames billowed from the abandoned Midvale Middle School Saturday evening.

Crews responded to a fire at the old school, 7852 S. Pioneer Street, about 7:30 p.m. A Unified Fire Authority spokesman said firefighters entered the burning school after hearing reports that two people were possibly seen inside the building.

But firefighters reported they did not find anyone inside.

Crews had extinguished the fire to smoke and hot spots by roughly 8 p.m.

Community members gathered at the sight of the fire — the dark plumes of smoke could be seen from across the valley. Some were concerned for the new elementary school next door.

The 60-year-old school was scheduled for demolition at the end of July, but still carries quite a few memories for people in the neighborhood.

"Even though it was sad that they were tearing it down and then rebuilding it, it's sad that it had to burn down like that," said neighbor Tori Vail.

Late Saturday night, investigators had not yet determined the cause of the fire. Fire officials said they're not ruling anything out, including arson.
