TOOELE COUNTY — Three women were injured in a rollover crash Saturday on eastbound I-80, a couple of miles west of the Grantsville exit.
The accident happened shortly after 5 p.m. near mile marker 82, when the driver of the Pontiac Grand Am drifted off the road to the right and then overcorrected to the left, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The car rolled into the median and landed on its top.
A woman sitting in the backseat, who investigators said was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected. She was flown to a hospital in critical condition.
The driver sustained minor injuries in the crash, and her front-seat passenger was taken to a hospital via ambulance in "poor condition," the UHP said.
Eastbound I-80 was closed for 90 minutes while responders attended to the women, all about age 20, and cleaned up the crash, UHP Sgt. Mary Kaye Lucas said.
It was unclear how fast the car was driving, but alcohol is being investigated as a contributing factor in the crash, she said.
The sergeant also cautioned motorists to take precautions on the road.
"You can see just in this crash alone, the one that wasn't restrained was hurt much worse than the two that were," Lucas said. "So obviously, wearing your seat belt and obeying the speed limit is a big thing we want to caution everybody on."
Names the women involved in the accident were not released to the media Saturday.
