SALT LAKE CITY — A welfare check performed by Salt Lake police Monday has turned into a homicide investigation.

Just after 6 a.m., police found the body of Edward Walker, 57, in his room at 1459 S. Roberta St.

"Because of what they found on scene, they called out homicide detectives," said Salt Lake police Lt. Greg Wilking.

Wilking said Walker suffered some sort of trauma.

"Obviously not a natural-looking cause of death," he said of what led officers to believe it was a homicide.

Police would not say Tuesday what type of injuries the man suffered or how the injuries occurred.

Officers were originally called to the residence after an acquaintance of Walker's became concerned and asked police to drive by his house and check on him.

"Somebody that knows this person and knows this person's routine was concerned because this routine was not kept," Wilking said of what raised the acquaintance's suspicion.

Police were looking Tuesday for Jill Rae Montoya 34, for questioning, calling her a "person of interest." Wilking did not know the possible relation between Montoya and Walker, only that she is a person that Walker was "known to be around," Wilking said.

Wilking said Montoya was known to frequent the area of 1300 South and State Street.

Police did not know Tuesday whether anything was missing from Walker's house.

Court records show Montoya has prior convictions for having a fake ID for the purpose of being another person, attempted theft by receiving stolen property, aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, and assault.

Anyone with information can call police at 801-799-3000.
