SALT LAKE CITY — According to David Aldridge of TNT Sports, the Utah Jazz have finally signed Trey Lyles to his rookie scale contract, ending a period when he missed summer league practice and games.

Lyles didn't play with the Jazz while his contract was negotiated, an unusual step for rookies. Most first round picks play despite not having come to official terms with their teams.

On Friday, Jazz GM Dennis Lindsey told the Deseret News that Lyles being out was "on me."

Lindsey continued, "Don't blame the kid at all."

It's not clear why Lyles was held out. The Jazz could have been exploring a trade involving Lyles, as players cannot be traded for 30 days after they sign their contracts.

Lyles' agent, Rich Paul, could have also been holding his client out as a negotiating tactic as they hammered out bonuses, summer league incentives and more. Over half of first round pick deals have incentives that allow the player to make up to 120 percent of the rookie scale, but the terms of those incentives are up for negotiation. Still, it's an unusual move for an agent.

Regardless, it appears to be resolved now. It's not clear if Lyles will immediately play in the Utah Jazz Summer League game Tuesday night or Thursday night, or if he'll be prepped for play in Las Vegas.
