SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake firefighters typically put on heavy coats, helmets and other fire protective gear when they're called out.

But on Sunday, shorts, a T-shirt and a pair of hiking shoes were all that were needed.

A crew from Salt Lake Fire Station 10 was called to assist animal control officers on an injured dog just after 7 p.m. in an area known as the Living Room off the Shoreline Trail above the University of Utah. The dog had injured his paw and wasn't moving, said Salt Lake fire spokesman Jasen Asay.

Firefighters hiked 2.3 miles to the injured purebred Vizsla, gave him water, and then firefighter Tony Stowe put the dog on his shoulders and carried him down the trail. The rescue took about 45 minutes.

The dog, who officials later learned was named Rue, was reunited with its owner Monday.
