WEST VALLEY CITY — Bangerter Highway reopened after a serious crash diverted several lanes of traffic and injured three people early Monday morning.

The crash happened just after midnight at the intersection of 4100 South and Bangerter Highway, according to Lt. Jeff Conger with the West Valley City Police Department.

He said a car with three people inside ran a red light and was hit by a pickup truck. The driver of the pickup was not injured, but all three people in the car were taken to hospitals. A man in his 70s riding in the back seat was in critical condition.

Conger said no drugs or alcohol were involved. Police are investigating whether the driver was distracted.

"They might have just been getting off work around 12 o'clock when this happened, a little after 12. But other than that, we don't know if they were confused at the light or what was going on," Conger said.

The eastbound and southbound lanes of Bangerter Highway were diverted but all lanes reopened around 7:30 a.m.
