WEST VALLEY CITY — A man with a long criminal history who police say fled from them in a stolen Lexus, then ran off and tried to hide in a pond was arrested and found to be in possession of numerous weapons.

Robert Lee Arnold, 36, of South Salt Lake, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Thursday for investigation of receiving stolen property, two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, drug possession and interfering with an arrest.

According to a jail report, police spotted a stolen Lexus RX 450 about 1 a.m. Thursday near 1700 S. Redwood Road. After spiking the fleeing vehicle's tires, the driver got out and ran, according to the report.

Police K-9s were brought to the area and tracked down Arnold, who was hiding in a pond, the report stated. He ran off again, disobeying numerous commands to stop. Arnold finally got down on the ground and surrendered as police closed in on him, the report stated.

Officers recovered a bag that Arnold had dumped while fleeing. Inside, they found two guns, one of them loaded, along with four knives and a small amount of meth and heroin, the report states.

According to Utah State Court records, Arnold was convicted of felony drug possession in May 2014. He was sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to undergo drug treatment.

In 2012, he was convicted of assault by a prisoner, sentenced to six months in jail and ordered into a drug treatment program. Other convictions include attempted aggravated robbery in one case and burglary in another in 2002, and drug possession with intent to distribute in 1999.
