SCIPIO, Millard County — The 300-acre wildfire that forced the temporary closure of I-15 in both directions Friday evening was reduced to about 184 acres as of Saturday afternoon.

The fire, about two miles south of Scipio, was caused by a lightning strike about 7 p.m. Friday. Crews were able to open the northbound lane after about 45 minutes, and the southbound lane another 40 minutes later, but crews continued to fight the fire west of the freeway throughout Saturday.

Firefighters used air-tankers, a plane and a helicopter, fire engines, 12 smoke jumpers, and additional crews on the ground to battle the fire, fire officials said. The effort has amounted to about 140 fire personnel.

Kern River Natural Gas Pipeline, Rocky Mountain Power Lines and two homes were in vicinity of the fire, but fire officials said none were threatened Saturday.

As of 7 p.m. Saturday, fire officials reported no new fire growth.

The blaze is one of the state's first big fires of the season. Fire officials have dubbed it the Scipio Summit Fire.
