WEST VALLEY CITY — A Sandy man died Thursday when he was struck by a vehicle as he got out of his car to change a tire.

Graham Ambrose, 51, pulled over to the side of state Route 201 near 5600 West about 9 p.m. Thursday with a flat tire. His wife remained in the car as he got out to fix the flat.

As the man was looking for tools in the trunk, the driver of an eastbound vehicle traveling "at a high rate of speed" somehow lost control and hit Ambrose and the parked vehicle, according to a statement from the Utah Highway Patrol. The impact threw Ambrose 200 feet and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lynette Ambrose, 63, and the driver of the second vehicle, Anthony Lopez, 21, of Clearfield, were taken to Pioneer Valley Hospital in critical condition, according to the UHP.
