SALT LAKE CITY — Utah football player Dominique Hatfield was charged Thursday after being arrested on suspicion of aggravated robbery.

Hatfield, 20, is being charged with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, and theft of lost or misdelivered property, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to charging documents, the victim was shopping for an Xbox in classified ads and contacted the seller “David Wilkins” via text message. The two arranged to meet at a car wash near 625 West and 3900 South in Salt Lake City on Tuesday night.

After a brief conversation, Hatfield showed a knife and demanded $180 before fleeing the scene while leaving his backpack, according to the documents.

The victim later had his wife contact “David Wilkins” at the same phone number to purchase two iPhones for sale. Hatfield agreed to meet her at the same car wash. The victim contacted police, who met Hatfield at the car wash before arresting him, according to the documents.

A cashier at a Maverik gas station near the car wash said a man matching the description of Hatfield had been in the store minutes before the incident, the documents said.

Hatfield later told police he was selling the iPhones for $380 and had agreed to meet the victim at the car wash. Hatfield said he obtained the phones after “drunk people would leave their phones” at his apartment and that he had plans to sell them, according to the charging documents.

Hatfield is in jail on a $50,000 bail. If convicted, Hatfield could face five years to life in prison and a possible fine up to $10,000 for the first-degree felony charge, and up to one year in jail and a possible fine up to $2,500 for the misdemeanor charge.

A court date for Hatfield has not been set.
