OREM — A local outdoor enthusiast saw the need for a more compact and versatile camping stove so he created his own.

Orem resident Alex Baker said he grew up with a love for camping and the outdoors. However, he grew frustrated by the lack of options with outdoor cooking equipment.

“I’ve seen kind of wood-burning stoves out there, but none of them were what I was looking for,” he said. “I thought I could make a better one that was more versatile and had more features in a smaller package.”

Baker began designing a new compact, module stove in October 2014, and six months later, created the first prototype of the Mod Stove. The Mod Stove is a 5-pound outdoor cooking stove designed to utilize a variety of fuel sources including wood, charcoal, solid fuel tablets and a spirit or gel burner.

The stove includes several modular pieces including a burn chamber, a base, a skewer rack and skewer, a firestarter and a paracord. The stainless-steel stove takes under one minute to assemble, and once taken apart, compacts inside the burn chamber, Baker said.

“It’s all one contained package,” he said. “It’s all basically one piece so you don’t have to worry about searching for all the different (parts.) It all comes together, basically.”

The stove is small enough to be kept under the seat of a car and can be utilized as an emergency preparedness kit.

“It’s extremely simple,” he said. “We wanted something that was easy to use, super versatile and especially the compact (aspect) as well. Those were some of our main goals when designing it.”

Baker launched a Kickstarter campaign for the stove June 2. During the Kickstarter, the stove is available for $69. He plans to sell the stove online and will continue manufacturing several of the metal parts in Utah.
