SALT LAKE CITY — An accounting clerk who embezzled more than a half million dollars from Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems will go to prison.

Stephanie Jarvi-Peterson, 42, of Salt Lake City, admitted in U.S. District Court that from 2007 to 2013 she stole $572,303 by writing checks on the company's account payable to petty cash and forging the authorization signature.

She would then either deposit the check into her personal bank account or cash the check. She falsified accounting records to show the expenditures as payments to vendors. UAMPS provides electricity to community power systems in eight western states.

In 2011, Jarvi-Peterson took $192,847 and used that money as personal income but failed to report it to the IRS, according to a plea agreement.

Jarvi-Peterson pleaded guilty in March to filing a false tax return. U.S. District Judge David Nuffer sentenced her to 24 months in prison Monday and ordered her to repay the stolen money.
