LOGAN — Two Utah State football players injured in Friday’s car accident in Trenton were released from Logan-area hospitals Sunday afternoon, the university announced.

Redshirt freshman defensive lineman Adewale Adeoye and senior defensive lineman John Taylor were released after suffering non-life-threatening injuries in Friday’s accident. Senior nose guard Travis Seefeldt, redshirt junior lineman Edmund Faimalo and former softball player Sarah Vasquez continue to improve but remain hospitalized, according to a statement from USU athletics.

“Thank you to everyone who has had these five Aggie student-athletes in their thoughts and prayers, including numerous representatives from the Mountain West Conference and its member institutions,” USU interim athletics director Jana Doggett said in a statement. “We also want to thank the first responders and all of the medical personnel who have worked so tirelessly to provide the best care possible to our family members.

“They are truly blessed.”

The five athletes were returning from a trip to nearby Newton Dam Reservoir Friday afternoon when their Chevy Tahoe slowed at a stop sign at state Route 142 and Route 23. Thinking the area was a four-way stop, Seefeldt, the driver of the SUV, pulled into the path of an oncoming semitrailer-truck, according to witnesses.

The semi, which was carrying 52,000 pounds of milk, attempted to swerve but struck the SUV on the driver’s side and push it 75 yards into a nearby yard, according to a police report.

None of the five athletes was wearing a seat belt, according to police. The 46-year-old driver of the semi was not transported for care, nor was his 11-year-old son, who was riding as a passenger, according to police.

Faimalo, Taylor and Adeoye were initially transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Seefeldt was airlifted to Ogden with several broken ribs, according to Utah State head football coach Matt Wells. Vasquez underwent several successful surgeries on Saturday and was alert and responsive throughout the day, according to Utah State head softball coach Steve Johnson.
