SCOFIELD STATE PARK — Scofield State Park is giving campers new alternatives with the recent addition of a 28-foot RV trailer available for rent.

Scofield State Park was established as a state park in 1965. The area was settled in the 1870s and the park, town and reservoir were named after timber contractor and coal miner General Charles W. Scofield, according to the park website.

Scofield State Park has a variety of camping options including two teepees available for rent that have couches that fold into beds, according to park manager Jonathan Hunt. The newest addition for campers is a 28-foot RV trailer that sleeps eight people and has air conditioning, a TV, DVD player, water and electricity. The trailer is owned by Tony Basso RV who wanted to show it off to the public in a park environment, Hunt said.

The park has two main campgrounds, Mountain View and Madsen Bay. Mountain View has 34 camping units that include restrooms with flush toilets, heated showers, fish cleaning and disposal stations and a group pavilion.

The Madsen Bay has 40 camping units and recently went through “an upgrade” to accommodate larger RVs, Hunt said. Water and electrical hookups were added to each of the redesigned, larger campsites. The area also has restrooms, a fish cleaning and disposal station and a boat ramp on the reservoir.

“Scofield is the perfect camping spot to bring your family to escape the heat for a few days,” Hunt said. “We are located at just over 7,600 feet in elevation and are much cooler than the valley. There is a reason Scofield has the nickname of ‘Pleasant Valley.’ ”

Campers can also enjoy fishing at Scofield Reservoir. The reservoir is about 2,800 surface acres and is stocked by Division of Wildlife Resources officials each year with tiger trout and Bear Lake cutthroat trout, Hunt said. People can also catch crawdads in the reservoir.

“July is the perfect time to catch them,” Hunt said. “The warmer water in July brings the crawdads to the shoreline and they can easily be caught. Simply tie raw chicken to a string and let the chicken sit on the bottom of the lake for a few minutes. Then, slowly lift the string and chicken up and more likely than not you will have a crawdad hanging on to the chicken. After a fun hour or so catching crawdads, you should have enough for a meal.”
