ANTIMONY, Garfield County — The 19-year-old man who died at Otter Creek State Park on Saturday has been identified.
The body of Jommel Muhi, a foreign exchange student from the Philippines, was recovered Saturday night at the park's reservoir. Muhi was with his brother, and the two were spending time on a fishing boat when the 19-year-old decided to go for a swim, said Utah State Parks Lt. Regan Wilson.
Muhi "cramped up" and soon died, Wilson said. He said information released earlier by police, stating that bad weather may have led to Muhi's death, is inaccurate. The weather became troublesome only after rescue workers arrived, he said.
Search and rescue crews from Wasatch County were training nearby and were the first to respond to the area, Wilson said. Muhi's body was found under the water's surface using sonar technology. He was not wearing a life jacket.
Muhi was an employee at Bryce Canyon National Park.
