SARATOGA SPRINGS — Two house pets died in a house fire allegedly started intentionally Monday afternoon, city officials said.
A cat and rabbit died and a second cat had to receive medical treatment after a fire started at 244 E. Range Road, said Saratoga Springs city spokesman Owen Jackson. The residents of the home escaped the blaze without injury.
Wesley Sayer, 23, the son of the homeowners, was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of aggravated arson.
Some sort of accelerant was used to spread the fire, which caused heavy damage to a staircase and the surrounding area, Jackson said. No motive was immediately apparent, he said.
Smoke damage to the home has rendered it temporarily unlivable, according to Jackson. An estimate of the damage total wasn't available Monday afternoon.
The surviving cat was given oxygen at the scene and taken to a veterinarian for further care.
