SALT LAKE CITY — Every day, we have the opportunity to make the world a better place.

Maybe that means we give someone the benefit of the doubt or responding with love instead of irritation or anger. Maybe it means we stop what we're doing and help someone look for something.

Each week, readers share stories of times someone made the world better with a small act of kindness.

On being patient and generous:

Jaron P.

"On our way home from my 6-year-old son's Make-A-Wish trip, we were having a difficult time managing our four young boys on the plane. My 5-year-old spent a majority of his time kicking the chair of the man sitting in front of him.

"At the end of the flight, the man approached me. Instead of telling me how I could better manage my children, he said, 'You have a beautiful family, and are doing a wonderful job with your boys.' He then handed me a $100 bill and smiled. 'Dinner’s on me tonight,' he said. I was touched by one of God’s mortal angels."

On joining the search:

April L.

"Last month, while going through the checkout counter after shopping for a friend who was physically unable to shop for herself, I discovered to my horror that I couldn’t find the envelope containing her food stamp card.

"The cashier was very patient with me and wasn’t in the least bit irritated. In fact, she seemed to genuinely understand and empathize with my feeling of panic — and she showed it by joining my husband and son in their search of the store, leaving her post and searching all the aisles.

"She soon came back beaming and waving the envelope. She had found it on the floor not far from her check-out lane.

"She was a very Christ-like young woman. I will never forget her kindness!"

On witnessing kindness:

Audrea D.

"I work at Chick-fil-A in Draper, and we frequently see guests in the drive-thru paying for the car behind them. Sometimes a line of 10-15 cars will pay for each other. It's such a cool feeling to be a part of others paying it forward!"

On supporting veterans

John M.

"I want to thank The Black Spool in Clearfield, Utah. They embroidered my purple heart logo on my shirts. When I went to pick the shirts up, the owner said no charge! Thanks for supporting veterans."
