DRAPER — Kids of all ages raced around a dirt track spinning tricks on their bikes on Saturday as officials opened the state's newest cycling park.
The Draper Cycle Park, located near the Andy Ballard Equestrian Center, 1455 E. Highland Drive in Draper, features a muti-use trailhead for miles of terrain and a mountain bike skills pocket park, as well as a dirt play area for younger riders. Future development will include a climbing wall, a velodrome, and cyclocross and criterium courses, among other things.
Draper City donated the land, but what's been accomplished at the park thus far with only $100,000 in additional funds has been remarkable. The park has ideal biking conditions, providing a 4,500-foot potential elevation for sport competitions pending construction of the velodrome.
Despite efforts and generous donations, approximately $3.5 million still needs to be raised to fund the full completion of the project.
