WEST JORDAN — Fireworks are a staple of summer months. Whether celebrating as part of the country’s independence from Great Britain or some other event, fireworks make for an enjoyable summer.

Although recreational use of fireworks cannot legally be used until a few days during July, several cities around the state have started crafting fireworks restriction areas to help eliminate fire-prone areas.

West Jordan City released its restrictions Wednesday, which prohibits fireworks, lighters and matches in parts of the city, including:

  • All areas west of U-111 (Bacchus Highway) within West Jordan City limits.
  • All areas within 200 feet of the Jordan River Parkway Trail east of 1300 West.
  • All areas within 200 feet of the area commonly referred to as Clay Hollow Wash that runs east and west in the area of 7800 South (approximately 4800 West to U-111).
  • All areas within 200 feet of Bingham Creek, located near Old Bingham Highway running the length of the east/west boundaries within West Jordan.
  • All city parks, unless a permit has been obtained for a professional display.

“The conditions quickly dry out grass and weeds, creating a large fuel load and potentially significant fire danger,” West Jordan Fire Chief Marc McElreath said in a statement. “These restrictions are in place to help keep people and property safe. We encourage people to attend the city’s professional fireworks show in Veterans Memorial Park on July 4 at 10 p.m.”

Individuals caught violating the city’s restrictions will face a Class B misdemeanor, which could result in up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, according to a West Jordan City news release.

West Jordan City said it would be “providing extra patrols and assisting our police department with the enforcement of these restrictions.”

State law allows for the recreational use of fireworks from July 1-7 and July 21-27.

In Salt Lake County, fireworks may not be used after 10 p.m. Check with your respective city officials to see restrictions pertaining to your area.
