UTAH LAKE STATE PARK — Utah Lake State Park officials announced a wakeboard cable park will be opening at the state park in 2016.

Utah Lake is 24 miles long and 13 miles wide at its widest point, making it one of the largest fresh-water lakes west of the Mississippi, according to Utah Lake State Park manager Jason Allen. An official marina was constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps program and Utah Lake was established as a state park in 1967.

The lake provides the main attractions at the park and soon a new activity will be available. Allen said the park plans to contract with a company to construct a wakeboard cable park in the outer marina area of the main marina located off 4400 W. Center St. in Provo. The wakeboard cable park will have towers with a cable pulley system that pulls wakeboarders in a circle on the water. There will also be built-in jumps and rails, Allen said.

The wakeboard cable park, “The Landings at Utah Lake State Park,” is expected to open Memorial Day Weekend in 2016, making it one of three in the state.

“Instead of a $100,000 boat, you pay your $10, $20, $30 or whatever he is going to charge, and you get so many rides around the outer marina,” Allen said.

While the wakeboard cable park won’t open until next year, here are several activities to enjoy at Utah Lake State Park this summer.

Fishing

Utah Lake is about 8 feet deep on average, and while it’s currently only about 4 feet deep in the marina, Allen said it’s still a great place for fishing. The lake has a variety of fish species including two types of catfish, small and large mouth bass, walleye and perch.

Allen said the lake has seven official marinas, making fishing by boat easily accessible. However, the long jetties on the lake also make for great shore fishing. Allen also recommends fishing at the mouths of the rivers that feed into the lake: the Provo River, Spanish Fork River and the American Fork River.

Although it’s precarious to dock a boat at, Bird Island is also a popular location for fishing on Utah Lake. Allen said it’s the only naturally-occuring island in Utah Lake. Bird Island got its name in the 1960s after becoming a popular destination for people to gather bird eggs.

Camping

The Provo Center Street Marina is managed by Utah Lake State Park and has 55 campsites available. The camping area is located near the trailhead of the Provo River Trail, making running and biking easily accessible for campers.

The designated campsites provide running water, electricity, flushable toilets and showers. There are also fire pits and BBQ grills available. There are also sand volleyball courts near the marina. The camping areas can be reserved and walk-ins are also often available.

Camping is not allowed on any of the beaches surrounding Utah Lake, Allen said.

Sunset cruises and sailboat lessons

The Bonneville School of Sailing provides romantic boat cruises around Utah Lake during sunset, Allen said. The cruises can be reserved online and provide a unique tour around the lake.

Sailing boat lessons are also offered at Utah Lake. The Bonneville School of Sailing provides the boat and will take people out on the water to teach them how to sail. The lessons are available by appointment.

Festival

The Utah Lake Festival will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Provo Center Street Marina. There will be a variety of activities available including a photo scavenger hunt, sand castle building, hay rides, boat rides and live music.

“The main goals of the Utah Lake Festival are to educate the public about what is being done to improve the lake, promote recreational activities and allow the attendees to enjoy a beautiful Saturday at one of Utah’s greatest natural resources,” the Utah Lake website said.
