CEDAR CITY — There's a change in leadership coming in the athletic department at Southern Utah University. SUU announced Thursday that director of athletics Ken Beazer will resign to seek other employment opportunities.

For the time being, Beazer continues in his current role while SUU searches for a replacement. The national search and fundraising efforts will begin June 1.

"I’m proud of what we have been able to accomplish over my time at SUU," Beazer said.

During his nearly 10-year tenure, the Thunderbirds moved into the Big Sky Conference. The football team made its first playoff appearance in 2013, added women's golf and women's volleyball to SUU's portfolio of sports, and racked up 18 conference championships.

"I truly believe we have the greatest core of coaches anywhere," he said. "All of them exhibit high character, professionalism, passion and a genuine interest in the overall development of our student-athletes.

"It has been a privilege to associate with so many great student-athletes, coaches and administrators over my tenure, all of whom have enriched my life.”

SUU president Scott L. Wyatt also commented, saying "Ken’s devotion to athletics and his extremely hard work ethic will be difficult to match, and we are excited to see where his next adventure takes him. His lasting legacy will be seen and felt for a long time to come.”

Beazer was first appointed as director of athletics in 2006.
