PROVO — A new Utah company is putting a different spin on greeting cards with their unique, detailed, 3-D designs.

Cards2Life was founded in November 2014 by Spanish Fork resident Curtis Blair, a co-owner of the new Provo company. In October 2014, Blair said he and several of his associates went to a trade show in China to get ideas for a new business venture. He said they spent a few days perusing the 3,200 booths at the show and saw a greeting cards booth.

Blair said the card booth sparked an idea to create intricate, hand-crafted 3-D pop-up cards that seem to come “to life,” prompting the company name. The company began creating unique designs in Provo that were then laser cut and hand-assembled in China. Cards2Life formally launched at a trade show in February.

“For those that open these cards, it’s really a ‘wow’ experience, something that’s not been seen before in the gifting industry,” Blair said. “When they fold flat, they actually lay flat. But when they are opened, these 3-D structures come to life and they are as high as 4-6 inches. It’s an amazing thing to see.”

Card2Life public relations director Stephen Sainsbury said they create customized cards for birthdays, weddings, Valentine’s Day, new baby, Christmas, travel and floral thank you cards. Sainsbury said their travel cards include ferris wheels, boats, planes and iconic monuments like the Eiffel Tower. He said the beautiful “Ship of Wonder” and ferris wheels cards are some of their most popular.

Blair said the inspiration for their cards come from real-life experiences and their culture for their market. The company began creating cards of the LDS Salt Lake City Temple after a friend suggested it.

“Really it’s just capturing some of our life events and finding a way to articulate that message in a very simple, 3-D pop-up structure,” Blair said.

Due to the intricacy and precision of the laser cutting and hand assembling, each cards takes about 9 minutes to create.

The Cards2Life founders recently returned to Utah after presenting their unique product at the National Stationery Show in New York City on May 15-18. The cards are sold online and in 150 boutiques across the U.S. including at the Flower Patch in Salt Lake City.
