PROVO — Stuart Anderson hasn’t left his daughter’s side since Monday night when she was flown to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

“This is the hardest thing we’ve been through as a family. I wouldn’t wish it on anybody,” Anderson said.

Maylee Anderson, 16, remains in a coma with a brain injury that doctors are still assessing.

“She lost her left eye and, of course, extensive damage. Her jaw is shattered; her face,” Anderson said.

Stuart Anderson said there have been some promising signs, which he said are small miracles.

“There have been a few times this morning when she gripped my hand. Some of it I could tell was reactive, simply shrugging from what the nurses were doing but one time, in particular, when I told her I was going to leave for a bit, it seemed more deliberate,” Stuart Anderson said.

Maylee Anderson and her mother Christine were involved in a car crash Monday night near their home in Highland.

Lone Peak police said Maylee Anderson was turning left to head south on Highland Boulevard at 11800 North when she turned in front of a northbound Jeep.

Police said two people were in that Jeep. They did not have updates on their conditions but did not believe their injuries were life-threatening.

Since the crash, residents have called for change at that intersection.

Stuart Anderson said he would support any improvements.

“I know other areas in this part of the valley that do have roundabouts that seem to be effective, speed bumps, that kind of thing that can help slow people down,” he said.

But right now, his focus is on his daughter and wife.

Christine Anderson is at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, where she’s improving.

“She has broken ribs, and I believe either a broken leg or a broken arm,” Stuart Anderson said.

The couple was able to video chat, and Wednesday afternoon, the family posted on Facebook that an anonymous donor had paid to move Christine Anderson from IMC to Provo so she could be with her family.

“I think it pains her more that she can’t physically be here with my daughter than even what her injuries are or anything else,” Stuart Anderson said.

He said the community support overwhelming. Stuart Anderson said he’s received messages from people all over the country and the world.

“I can’t tell you how grateful I am,” he said.

Classmates signed posters for Maylee, who on Tuesday would have finished her sophomore year at Lone Peak High School.

As of Wednesday afternoon, a GoFundMe page has raised more than $13,000.

Stuart Anderson says his daughter and wife are fighters.

“If it’s to be, it’ll be and if not, we’re prepared for that too,” he said.
