SALT LAKE CITY — A man was killed early Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle, police said.

The man, identified by Unified Police Department as Kevin Bushman, 51, was riding a bicycle eastbound on 3300 S. by 1600 E. in Millcreek at roughly 1:02 a.m. Saturday morning, according to detective Ken Hansen of Unified Police. Bushman was not wearing reflective gear, and was hit from behind by a man driving a black BMW, Hansen said.

Bushman was propelled up and over the top of the vehicle and then off onto the sidewalk. Officers found him dead at the scene, according to Hansen.

Procedural DUI tests were performed on the driver of the BMW, who has not been identified at this time. Results of these tests will be released at a later point, Hansen said.

Hansen stressed that bicyclists, particularly those traveling in lanes also used by motor vehicles, should always have appropriate front and rear lights and reflective equipment, especially a helmet.
