SALT LAKE CITY — A woman was critically injured and her boyfriend arrested Thursday after police say he intentionally hit her with his vehicle.

Anthony Robert Vigil, 29, allegedly hit his girlfriend with a 2000 Lincoln Town Car about 5 p.m. near 200 W. Mead Ave. and then fled the scene.

The woman, 25, was hospitalized with critical injuries that appear to be "very serious," said Salt Lake police detective Cody Lougy.

Vigil was arrested a short time later in South Salt Lake. Evidence shows he purposely hit his girlfriend with the car, according to Lougy.

The homicide unit for Salt Lake police was called to the scene "in case (the woman) doesn’t pull through," Lougy said.

Police are investigating Vigil for aggravated assault, he added, but potential charges could be upgraded to murder if the woman dies.
