DRAPER — Sydney Kener, 13, is in critical condition after police say a game of "car surfing" went wrong.

“With everything kids do nowadays, it’s a catching thing I guess,” Draper Police Sgt. Chad Carpenter said.

This is the first time Sgt. Carpenter said he’s seen this frightening fad in Draper city, but after Monday’s incident he hopes to never see it again.

“If we find people doing that (car surfing) we will be enforcing a zero-tolerance policy.”

Around 8:30 p.m. Monday near 1400 East and Mike Weir Drive, Draper police were called to the scene of an accident where a 16-year-old driver had the car in motion and was traveling down Mike Weir Drive with Kener outside of the vehicle on the trunk "car surfing."

“The 13-year-old (Kener) was taken to the hospital, initially to Intermountain Medical Center, due to the age and the severity of the injuries they took the 13-year-old to Primary Children’s Medical Center,” Sgt. Carpenter said. The teen had “very severe injuries to the head.”

"It's not cool. When you have the potential of injuring yourself or someone else, it's not cool,” Sgt. Carpenter said.

The 16-year-old driver was issued a citation.

The family of Kener said she was in a coma but Tuesday evening she had woken up. According the Kener's father, Kevin Kener, doctors say his daughter will need at least six months of rehabilitation.

“When you use poor judgment, and couple that with a vehicle and not being smart, you’re going to have a tragic outcome,” warned Sgt. Carpenter.
