MYTON, Duchesne County — The city's former fire chief and his wife have pleaded guilty to charges that were filed after prosecutors said the couple used public funds to buy fuel for their private vehicles.

Aaron Dwane Davis pleaded guilty late last month in 8th District Court to misusing public money, a third-degree felony, court records show. His wife, Shelby Lee Davis, had already pleaded guilty in March to theft, a class B misdemeanor.

Aaron Davis, 30, used the city's charge account at a local gas station over the course of at least two years to buy about $1,400 in fuel for his personal vehicle, according to Duchesne County prosecutors. Shelby Davis, 22, also used the city's charge account, racking up less than $500 in unauthorized purchases, prosecutors said.

The alleged thefts were discovered when the city received a tip, began scrutinizing its records for fuel purchases and realized the numbers didn't add up, investigators said.

Aaron Davis had been with the city's volunteer fire department for more than 10 years, according to Myton Mayor Kathleen Cooper. She did not know precisely when he was promoted to chief.

Shelby Davis was also a volunteer firefighter for Myton. The couple was dismissed from the fire department in January when the thefts came to light.

Aaron Davis' plea will be held in abeyance for two years. The case will be dismissed if he makes full restitution to the city, pays a $250 court fee and doesn't commit any new crimes during that time.

Shelby Davis was placed on court probation for two years and ordered to pay a $680 fine.
